Ways to Overcome or Cure Phobia

Hi dear friends, have you all gain more information on phobia from the previous entry yet? Well sadly, we are heading to the last entry for our topic discussion of Phobia. For this last entry the topic is Ways to Overcome or Cure Phobia. Is there any way to cure on people that afraid of water (Hydrophobia) or afraid of balloon (Globophobia)? For sure, every disease can be cured as long as we find the ways.

When you suffer from phobia, you feel ashamed to acknowledge your condition. Thus, you become an escapist who dread to admit, “I have phobia”. To live better and to return to normal life you have to think of ways to overcome phobias.

1. Exposure Therapy.

This consists of exposing you to the very thing you are afraid of. The idea is to deconditioning you to the fear. The exposure therapy has several disadvantages as the procedure can make you feel utterly uncomfortable. Moreover, if you fail to follow the steps of the therapy correctly the consequence can indeed be detrimental.

2. Relaxation technique.

When you suffer from phobias, physicians often state the need to exercise your body. Physical exercises, which you should follow, include active breathing processes and muscle relaxation techniques. These work sometimes but they are however not the best ways to overcome phobias.

3. Role of medicines and drugs as ways to overcome phobias?

When phobia affects you, your doctor may ask you to take Benzodiazepines as a relief to the condition. Valium or Diazepum are other significant ways to overcome phobias.
Beta-blockers along with other psychological treatment plans can too create a difference in your condition of fear, but they come with several side effects to make things more unbearable and complicated for you.

4. CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most notable ways to overcome your fears. First, you are made to recognize and identify the negative aspect of your mind.

Once you know what the problem is, you start to look for ways to overcome phobias. Hence, you become hopeful and you start being optimistic in life. CBT however takes time to cure your phobia, which tends to make you restless and impulsive.

5. Counselling

Counselling or psychotherapy too can cure your condition of fear or phobia. Under this treatment option you converse with a counsellor who guides you through the ways of how to create changes in life so that no fear or trepidation can deviate you from your principal aim or focus.
However, the result of counselling is often uncertain as the success of this treatment entirely depends upon the efficacy and the experience of the counselor.

6. Self-help NLP techniques and procedures – the best ways to say no to phobias

NLP self-help techniques are definitely the best and the most trusted ways to overcome phobias. With the correct use of this procedure, you can cause remarkable change in your mental “constructs” and balance the way you prefer to think and live. With self-help NLP techniques, you are able to get rid of your phobia. Fast and easy!

Well guys, now you know on how to cure phobia. Do you have any other suggestions or ways to cure phobia that you know? Lets share! :)

Lots of Love,

Effects of phobias.

Hey.. This is the third entry for our phobia discussion. Hope you guys get something new from the article.

A phobia is, by nature, confined to a specific object or situation. Unlike more broad-based mental disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, phobia sufferers are not constantly consumed by worry and fear. Nonetheless, a phobia can have a very real impact on your quality of life. Here is what you may not know about the effects of phobias.

1. Life-Limiting

One of the main criteria for diagnosing a phobia is that it is life-limiting in nature. Depending on what your phobia is, you might find it a real struggle to run errands, go out with friends or even make it to work every day.

These limitations can make you feel isolated. You may wonder why you are not like everybody else. You may have trouble keeping friends. You may become reclusive and depressed.

2. Embarrassing

Phobias can cause awkward and embarrassing situations. How do you explain to your best friend that you can never visit her home because she owns a dog? How do you turn down a trip to the Bahamas with a new love because you can’t bring yourself to get on a plane?

Social phobia can be especially difficult to manage, because the underlying fear is of humiliation. Having a phobic reaction can feel humiliating, reinforcing the fear and making the phobia more difficult to manage.

3. Feeling out of Control

Perhaps one of the worst emotional components of a phobia is the out of control feeling. You probably understand that your phobia is irrational, but no matter how hard you try you can’t get it under control. You wonder what it would be like to simply live your life without worrying that you may come into contact with that which you dread.

4. Helplessness

Helplessness may appear when you realize that your phobia is out of control. You may feel that there is nothing you can do to heal. You may assume that you will always have your phobia. You may wish things were different, but feel that they never will be.

If your phobia is causing any of these thoughts or feelings, it is important to seek treatment. Like any mental disorder, it is easy for a phobia to have an impact far beyond its basic symptoms. Treating the phobia will eventually help to reduce the negative feelings of shame and helplessness.

While you are in treatment, you may find that some negative feelings remain. Tell your mental health professional. Further therapy, perhaps from a psychodynamic point of view, can help you to sort out your feelings and concerns. While you are undergoing treatment, you may find that self-help methods and relaxation techniques can help to reduce your symptoms.

What is your piece of mind about this?

Types of Phobia

Hi, everyone! Now that we've had so much fun ;) discussing about the Definition of Phobia, I think it's the time for us to move on and get more familiar with our topic.

-> What Are the Types of Phobia?

Based on what I've read mostly from here:
http://psychology.about.com/od/phobias/f/dis_phobiadef.htm
and here:
http://www.phobia-fear-release.com/phobia-list.html

Phobia can be classified into three main categories:
A. Social Phobias - fear of social situations.
B. Agoraphobia - fear of being trapped in an inescapable place or situation.
C. Specific phobias - fear of a specific object (such as snakes).

Specific Phobia has four major types:

1. The natural environment—fear of lightening, water, storms, etc.
2. Animal—fear of snakes, rodents, spiders, etc.
3. Medical—fear of seeing blood, receiving injections, visiting a doctor, etc.
4. Situational—fear of bridges, leaving the home, driving, etc.

And from here, we could go to several pages, long-list of phobia , alphabetically in order :), some of which you could never dream of hearing!

For example, this is what I found. Phalacrophobia. It means 'fear of becoming bald'. Well, at least many people can relate to that, since most of us can't escape from losing hair the older we become :).
But wait until you hear this one. Peladophobia. Guess what it means...
I'll give you ten seconds................. time!

It's 'fear of bald people'.
Hehe..

So, what do you have to say about this? Have you came across some unheard of phobias before? Hopefully you can share with us here. I hope we can have a good discussion about this, and hoping to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,

Definition of Phobia

"Are You Afraid Of The Dark??"

**********************************************************************************

Hello there...well, for our second entry today,we are not going to discuss about what dark and all but we would like to brief a bit about our topic which is Phobia..Let us start with its definition....lets check it out :)

According to the American Psychiatric Association, a phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation. In most cases, the phobia involves a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm.

For example, people suffering from agoraphobia fear being trapped in an inescapable place or situation.

By definition, phobias are IRRATIONAL, meaning that they inappropriately interfere with your everyday life or daily routine.

For example, if your fear of heights prevents you from crossing a bridge to get to work, that fear is considered irrational. If your fears keep you from enjoying life or even preoccupy your thinking so that you are unable to work, sleep, or do the things you wish to do, then it is irrational.

Thus, there are several ways of diagnosing phobias disorder is that the fear must be excessive and disproportionate to the situation. For example; most people who fear heights would not avoid visiting a friend who lived on the top floor of a tall building; however a person with a phobia of heights would. Fear alone does not distinguish a phobia – both fear and avoidance must be evident. (Lefton, L. A., 1997)

Besides, common symptoms that is associated with phobias include diziness, breathlessness, nausea and a sense of unreality.

As far as we concerned, this is the medical definition of phobia according to the American Psychiatric Association. We seek for responses from all of you to define phobias based on your understanding and own perceptions.

Or maybe you guys out there have an experience of yours or people close to you to share? Mind to respond this post...Your cooperation is highly appreciated.. Thank you... :)
